Why isn't my business showing on Google Maps?
Start by searching your exact business name on Google Maps. If the listing doesn't appear, the problem is the listing itself: unverified, suspended, a duplicate, or never created. If it appears for your name but not when people search your service, like 'plumber near me', the listing is fine and the problem is ranking: category, distance, reviews or your website.
First, which problem do you have?
| What you see | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Your name finds nothing | The listing is missing, unverified, suspended or marked closed |
| Your name finds you, your service doesn't | A ranking problem: relevance, distance or prominence |
| You show up at home but not for customers | Distance: results change with where the search is made |
| A second listing with your name appears | A duplicate splitting your reviews and calls |
When the listing itself is the problem
- Not verified. An unverified listing may not show publicly at all. Check your Business Profile: if Google still asks you to verify, finish that first.
- Suspended. Google suspends listings that seem to break its guidelines, often after edits to the name, address or category. The profile manager will say so. Fix the cause, then request reinstatement.
- Marked closed or moved. Anyone can suggest edits on Maps. Check the status shown on your public listing, not only in your dashboard.
- A duplicate. Two listings for one business confuse Google and customers. See how to find and remove a duplicate listing.
When it's a ranking problem
This is the more common case and the more frustrating one: a good business that simply isn't among the first few results. Google says local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence. In practice that means:
- Your primary category doesn't match what people search. See choosing your primary category.
- Your website has no page for the service being searched. See service pages.
- Your reviews are fewer or older than the listings above you, or low ratings sit unanswered.
- Your details differ between Google, your site and directories. See NAP consistency.
A competitor ranking above you with fewer reviews is a sign the gap is in relevance, not quality. See why that happens.
Check the way a customer would
Search from your business address, not from home, and use the words a customer uses ("water heater repair", not your company name). Note your position and who is above you. That single search tells you more than any dashboard.

How long does it take for a new business to show on Google Maps?
After verification, a listing usually appears within days. Ranking for competitive searches takes longer and depends on category, distance and reviews.
Why does my business show on my phone but not for customers?
Results depend on where the search is made. You are close to your own address; your customers often aren't.
Can I pay Google to show up on Maps?
Ads can appear on Maps, but they don't change your organic position. The organic ranking can't be bought.
